University Academic Fellow in Medical Humanities at Leeds (Philosophy, Religion and History of Science)

posted on March 21, 2025

The University of Leeds is seeking to recruit up to 250 exceptional early career academics to tenure track equivalent Academic Fellowships over the next three years. Whether you are looking to establish your academic career as a new fellow or already hold an existing funded fellowship and wish to bring it to the University of Leeds we want to hear from you.

In recent years, Medical Humanities has emerged as a key theme in interdisciplinary teaching and research between the Arts, Healthcare and Biomedical Sciences. You will develop a research profile that will contribute to the University’s ambition to excel at REF2020, with a sustained record of internationally excellent (and some world-leading) publications and a strong record of presentations at international conferences. Acting as catalyst for collaboration across the Arts Faculty (and with other Faculties) in partnership with your School of PRHS mentor you will organise seminars with international speakers, network internationally at conferences and develop local collaborations, especially the Thackray Medical Museum.

You will also co-supervise PhDs and work on and further develop teaching in the School of PRHS and elsewhere in the area of Medical Humanities, especially history of medicine, including Discovery Theme modules; you will also develop the teaching and research potential for medical objects held within the University’s own Museum of the History of Science, Technology & Medicine. You would be expected to submit grant applications to the Wellcome Trust, ESRC and AHRC, working with colleagues across various Schools to submit larger grants, and also apply for a personal fellowship (e.g. an AHRC early-career Fellowship; Leverhulme Fellowship; Horizon 2020) as well as smaller individual or networking research grants, and PhD scholarships.

You will have significant proven research experience within the field of Medical Humanities, the ability to teach at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate level to students in the arts, medicine, and biomedical sciences, as well as a clear and compelling vision for personal academic development. We seek to recruit an early career stages scholar with a record of high quality publication, successful generation of research income, evident commitment to inter-disciplinarity, and demonstrable engagement with research impact and collaboration with external partners.
