‘Elegant Surgery’: The Beauty of Clinical Expertise

This lecture will preview another major event in the IAS ‘Recovery of Beauty’ theme, an exhibition to be held in collaboration with the Durham Light Infantry Museum Art Gallery in the spring of 2012. The exhibition, entitled ‘About Face’ will feature a series of paintings by the artist-surgeon Henry Tonks, who worked with the father of plastic surgery, Harold Gillies, during the First World War. The lecture will focus on the use of ‘elegance’ as a common descriptor for surgical procedures, including those of Gillies, and will reflect upon the reasons for this and the implications for embodied clinical practice.
Jane Macnaughton is Professor of Medical Humanities at Durham University. She co-Directs the Universities Wellcome Trust funded Centre for Medical Humanities, and is Deputy Head of the School of Medicine and Health, teaching in its undergraduate medical programme. She is an Honorary Consultant in Gynaecology and carries out a regular clinic at the University Hospital of North Durham. Her books include Clinical Judgement: evidence in practice (with Robin Downie), Madness and Creativity in Literature and Culture (with Corinne Saunders), and The Body and the Arts (with Corinne Saunders and Ulrika Maude).
