“The Cross-Disciplinary Invention of Sexuality: Sexual Science Beyond the Medical, 1890-1940”: a WT Joint Investigator Award

posted on March 16, 2025

New Generations in Medical Humanities participant Dr Jana Funke (English, University of Exeter) has been awarded a Wellcome Trust Joint Investigator Award. As a New Investigator, Jana will co-direct with Senior Investigator Professor Kate Fisher (History, University of Exeter) a 5-year project on “The Cross-Disciplinary Invention of Sexuality: Sexual Science Beyond the Medical, 1890-1940”.

The project, which will run from 2015 to 2020, seeks to explore the cross-disciplinary exchange between medical and non-medical forms of knowledge at the heart of early sexual science. It will offer a new history of sexual science and reconsider historical narratives concerning the modern invention of sexuality. It will raise broader questions about the dynamics of cross-disciplinary exchange that are central to the Medical Humanities and intervene in debates about sexual health and wellbeing today.
