Re-framing Disability: Portraits from the Royal College of Physicians (Study Day, Leeds, 19 January 2013)

On 19 January the Thackray Museum, Leeds, England, is hosting a day school in connection with the re-framing disability exhibition which is on display at the museum until the 27th January 2013.

The exhibition comes from the Royal College of Physicians and looks at four centuries of hidden history, with responses from the disabled community today.

The Museum welcomea speakers to reflect on different aspects of disability during a study day to complement this fascinating exhibition. Tickets are £25.00 (£22.00 concessions).

Every Picture Tells A Story: Images of disabled people at the Royal College of Physicians

Who was Blind Granny? Thomas Inglefield? Or the Heteradelph? Julie Anderson will explore the lives and stories behind the iconic images held by the Royal College of Physicians which form the basis of the project Re-framing Disability.

Thinking about difference

Disability-led arts organisation, Shape, were approached by staff at the Royal College of Physicians about becoming involved in a project to research and discuss images of historic disabled people from within the College’s collection. Shape’s role was to advise on setting up and running focus groups with disabled people involved in the arts and cultural sector. Tony will reflect on the relationship between disabled people and the medical profession, the work of Shape as a pioneering arts organisation, and the revealing and unexpected outcomes of this project.
