Raymond Tallis lecture “Mystery and Paradox of Scientific Medicine” – Live Stream Tuesday 8 February

posted on January 7, 2025

The inaugural lecture of the University of Nottinghams’s Philosophy of Medicine Health and Wellbeing (PhMHW) group will be given by Professor Raymond Tallis at 9.30am GMT on Tuesday 8 February 2011. It is now available online here.

“The Mystery and Paradox of Scientific Medicine”

Abstract: The lecture addresses issues of medical progress, knowledge, human and animal relations in a scientific medicine context. Science-based medicine has brought spectacular benefits in the treatment of disease, and consequently extending life, health and comfort expectancy. However, in many cases patients feel unhappy with the treatment they have received. The talk will examine the reasons for this, many of which arise from the gap between the subjective experience and the objective description of illness.
