Raven becomes voracious: Tales of insatiable hunger

Long ago in Haida country, in the time of the trickster Raven, lived a tribe and their prince – a prince who could never eat. Why was the prince perpetually satiated? What unlikely food awakened the prince’s hunger? And what role would Raven play in turning the prince’s stomach?

Make a pact with Raven and embark on a journey of appetite and desire. The inaugural event of the Body and Being Network will bring together the origin myth of the voracious Raven, as told by artist and storyteller Rebecca Leach, and histories of experimental starvation, as read by Professor Stanley Ulijazsek, director of the University of Oxford’s Unit for Biocultural Variation and Obesity.

The Body and Being Network is a new research initiative that aims to develop innovative interdisciplinary dialogues about the body. Co-founded by Karin Eli (University of Oxford) and Anna Lavis (University of Birmingham), the network instigates and supports collaborative encounters between scholars and performance artists, and challenges participants to develop analyses that involve their own embodied experiences.

Our tales of insatiable hunger will be told on 30 October, 5-6:30pm, at the Jacqueline du Pre Building at St Hilda’s College, Oxford. Attendance is free, but please contact the Body and Being Network by 27 October to RSVP via email.
