In History and Philosophy of Medicine on the Supportive care within the frame of a USPC cross-disciplinary grant « People in Medicine »
The cross-disciplinary Project « People in Medicine » is supported by the Humanities Institute (located at the Université Paris Diderot).
The Project is searching for a postdoctoral scholar in Medical History and Philosophy to be recruited by the University Paris Diderot. The candidate will be studying the paradigm of supportive care.
Supportive care bring together medical and psychosocial actions aimed at improving peoples’ lives, physically, psychologically and socially. They emerged in oncology. They gather various practices including: pain medicine and palliative care, psychological support and psychiatric treatment, physiotherapy or nutrition science and physical activity, and social work. Supportive care are a sign of the evolution of medical needs that stem from therapeutic achievements in oncology, on the one hand, and from the new chronic aspects of some cancers, on the other hand. They are also relevant to the new social expectations regarding medicine and care.
The postdoctoral researcher will investigate the intellectual, disciplinary and institutional history of supportive care. The successful candidate will also focus on the objectives, concepts, practices and values of the supportive care, relying on field surveys performed closely with relevant professionals. He/she will also focus his/her research on the needs of patients and their entourage, as well as on the patients’ benefits. She or he will put in question the ways and means of the interdisciplinarity promoted by these practices as well as care concepts at stake. He/she will open perspectives on other medical fields that could benefit from such paradigms.
The successful candidate for this postdoctoral position will be recruited for one year. There is also a possibility for one additional year thereafter.
