There have been several additions and alterations to this year’s programme of philosophy of psychiatry conferences available on the International Network of Philosophy and Psychiatry website. In particular there is a new address for the 16th INPP 2014 conference, and there are now available several details of the 3-centre 15th INPP UK conference / travelling symposium as follows:

Psychopathology and Clinical Practice: One Hundred Years of Karl Jaspers’ Psychopathology

A course for European early career psychiatrists

Directed by Giovanni Stanghellini, with additional teaching from Josef Parnas, Andrea Raballo and Henning Sass

This course focuses on the significance of phenomenological psychopathology for clinical practice, the phenomenological nature of mood disorders, and the phenomenological character of schizophrenia. The course programme, along with application details, can be found here.

Summer School in Philosophy of Psychiatry: Mind, Value and Mental Health

It is with great pleasure that we announce this one-week accredited summer school. Presented by the Faculty of Philosophy and the Department for Continuing Education, this event will explore the areas in which the philosophy of mind and ethics or the philosophy of value come into contact with issues about mental health.

The intensive programme will be delivered by renowned experts in the field through keynote lectures and seminars offering opportunities for substantial dialogue between philosophers, scientists and mental health practitioners.

The summer school will be led by members of the Faculty of Philosophy: Professor Martin Davies (Wilde Professor of Mental Philosophy, Corpus Christi College); Professor Bill Fulford (Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and Mental Health, University of Warwick, and Member of the Philosophy Faculty, University of Oxford); Dr Edward Harcourt (University Lecturer (CUF) in Philosophy, Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy, Keble College)

International guest speakers include: Professor George Graham (A.C. Reid Professor, Wake Forest University); Professor Terence Irwin (Chair of the Faculty Board and Professor of Ancient Philosophy, Keble College); Professor Chris Frith (Emeritus Professor, Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at University College London. 1. Current and Future Applications of Phenomenology in Psychiatry

As part of the celebrations marking the centenary of Karl Jaspers’ General Psychopathology, we are pleased to announce a one-day workshop at Grey College, Durham University exploring the theme Current and Future applications of Phenomenology in Psychiatry. This workshop will take place on the 20th July 2013, and is part of the three-centre symposium Philosophy and Psychiatry: The Next Hundred Years (Held at Durham, Kings College (London) and Oxford).

Speakers include: Nev Jones (DePaul University) Back to the Future: Rethinking the ‘First Persona’ in Phenomenological Psychopathology; Giovanni Stanghellini (Università di Chieti) Incomprehensibility: A New Ethics for Psychiatry; Tim Thornton (UCLan) TBA; Angela Woods and Matthew Ratcliffe (Durham University) Steps Toward a Phenomenological Analysis of Auditory Verbal Hallucinations.

Registration is free but spaces are limited, so please register via email by the 20th June. We particularly welcome participation from students, health care professionals, and service users.

3. The St Catz Colloquium: Making Change Happen

As the third of three forward-looking symposia marking the centenary of Karl Jaspers General Psychopathology, the St Catz Colloquium is now open for expressions of interest and submission of abstracts. The St Catz Colloquium will examine key aspects of how philosophy and psychiatry working together can make change happen. There will be four main sessions over two days.

  • Making Change Happen in Philosophy
  • Making Change Happen in Practice
  • Making Change Happen in the Sciences
  • Making Change Happen Internationally

Sessions will be interactive with brief formal presentations and plenty of time for sharing ideas and experience

The colloquium is free (including coffee, lunch and tea) but there will be a charge for overnight accommodation if you wish to stay at St Catherine’s College and for attendance at the conference dinner (on the Thursday evening). Details of charges will be announced in the New Year

A small number of bursaries will be available to help with accommodation for students and those who are unwaged
