The INTERSECT Network for Neuro-Cultures at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is pleased to invite presentation proposals for its Spring 2014 Graduate Student Conference, to take place on February 21st-23rd, 2014. The conference theme is “Neural Initiatives: Neuropolitics, Technoscience, and the Dynamic Brain,” and one of the primary goals of the conference will be to contextualize President Obama’s 2013 launch of the BRAIN Initiative by addressing its political, cultural, scientific, and historical implications.

Our keynote speaker will be Jenell Johnson, Assistant Professor of Communication Arts and Director of the Disability Studies Initiative at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and co-editor with Melissa Littlefield of The Neuroscientific Turn: Transdisciplinarity in the Age of the Brain. We are also pleased to have Steven Rose, Emeritus Professor of Biology at the Open University and Emeritus Professor of Physick at Gresham College London, and co-author with Hilary Rose of Genes, Cells and Brains: The Promethean Promises of the New Biology, as a featured speaker.
