Havi Carel, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, University of Bristol, and a patient, gives a philosophical perspective on patients and improving the quality of care at The King’s Fund’s NHS Leadership Summit 2013. She drew on her own experience of care, as well as the works of Kant, to highlight the important role that patients can play. ‘Low-grade insults’ – not returning a smile for example – were the biggest negative impact, and she called on the audience to treat other people as an end not a means.
