Compassion in Primary Healthcare – conflicts, politics and opportunities (Conference, Edinburgh, 6 June 2013)

posted on March 10, 2025

RCGP Scotland, in conjunction with the Open Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, the Primary Care Ethics Forum and the Thinkabouthealth network are delighted to announce a one day ethics conference taking place on Thursday 6th June in the newly renovated Edinburgh Grassmarket Community Project.

Compassion in healthcare has become a political hot topic in recent months, not least because of the findings in the recent Francis Report. It raises many issues for healthcare professionals and patients, giving and receiving healthcare in an increasingly target driven NHS. A series of lectures and workshops delivered by insightful and inspiring speakers will explore areas such as altruism and burnout, teaching and learning compassion, the evidence for compassion focused therapy, the use of reflective values- based practice, and the “politics” of compassion.

The conference will be opened by Mr Alex Neil MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Health, and will be chaired by Professor Alastair CampbellFRSE. Lectures and workshops will be delivered by a number of internationally renowned speakers including Professor Jane Macnaughton, Dr Paquita de Zulueta, Dr Peter Toon, Dr Charlie Heriot-Maitland and Dr Andrew Edgar.

This is the first conference of its kind to be held in Scotland and we anticipate that this will be a very popular event, with an appeal to a wide audience. Places are limited, therefore we would encourage you to book your place early via the RCGP website where you can also find further details about the conference.

If you are unable to book online, please contact us or telephone 0131 260 6800 for alternative options. The price for the day conference is £65 for RCGP members and students, and £75 for non-members. A picnic lunch and refreshments are included in the price.

Additional Lecture: There will be a preceding evening lecture to open the conference given by Mr Derek Feeley, Director-General Health and Social Care, and Chief Executive of NHS Scotland on Wednesday 05 June 2013. This lecture will be held at the Playfair Main Hall, Royal College of Surgeons, and will commence with refreshments in the Museum at 19:00, with the lecture starting at 19:30. The cost of the evening lecture is £10. Again places for this event are limited, therefore we would recommend you book your place early. It may be possible to purchase a ticket for this event on the door, subject to availability. For further details or to book a place, please visit our web site or e-mail us.
