LINE OF RESEARCH ON CLINICAL BIOETHICS AND HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF MEDICINE
BOGOTÁ, 28 – 29 AUGUST 2012
AUDITORIUM LUIS CARLOS GALÁN, PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD JAVERIANA
Within the broad discipline of bioethics, clinical bioethics is an exciting, complex and interesting field. In fact, the origins of bioethics are closely related to the implementation of a new way of analysing and debating ethical issues in the clinical setting. Today clinical practice is affected by highly regulated institutional environments, a growing legal ‘normativisation’, and the influence of economy and management. In this context, health institutions increasingly discuss the ethical dilemmas arising from daily clinical practice. Nowhere is the more the case than in Columbia where there is a marked rise in ethics committees, bioethics modules, medical ethics advisors, and professional bioethicists. This situation calls for a re-evaluation of the current methodologies approaches and it is for this reason that the Bioethics Institute at the Universidad Javeriana is organising joint meeting in Columbia for the 2nd Forum on Clinical Bioethics and the 1st Forum on History and Philosophy of Medicine,
The papers that will be offered combine bioethical reflection with historical and philosophical analyses and approaches. Although in the last few years bioethics has become a burgeoning field all over the world, to understand the current ethical, political, economic, legal, and cultural dynamics happening in the biomedical arena requires much more than bioethics. It is necessary to include other perspectives, particularly philosophy and history, together with social sciences and humanities.
