Prof Brian Hurwitz, Director of the Centre for the Humanities and Health at King’s College London writes: Scholars of the humanities, social scientists and clinicians are converging on the Guy’s campus of King’s College London next month to sharpen and critique narrative concepts and methods in health care. A Narrative Future for Health Care will examine some 180 papers, addressing a wide array of subject areas, such as the narrative codes and techniques which shape clinical conversations, the marked proliferation over the past 20 years of life-writings emanating from health and social care situations, illness and mental illness metaphors, and the role of film and graphic novels in medical education. Keynote talks will be given by internationally acclaimed novelists and scholars and writing workshops will be led by distinguished clinical writers of fiction and faculty members of the Narrative Medicine Programme of Columbia University, who will share techniques and raise the visibility of narrative concepts and practices relating to health care.
